Suspension compatibility

This is to answer one of the most common suspension questions. Will a suspension set from a 95-99 Tercel fit my 91-94 Tercel and or Paseo? This will also answer the front strut bar question too. Pay attention as I will post this ONLY ONCE and ONLY ON TERCEL CLUB! Anybody else that asks will get a link to this post. This also applies to MOST Starlet models.

 

First let's start with the basic. Yes a full coil-over set will work on any Sera, Tercel, Paseo, Starlet from 91-99, but with a catch. The catch is there was a change in the front upper strut support in 1997 in North America and 1996 just about every where else. Keep in mind that there may be some overlap one way or another depending on what country you are in. Basically, a Paseo from 92-96 has four bolts in the front upper strut support and only three bolts 97+. Tercels, 91-96 have 4 bolts... in most cases. Starlets (this is VERY important to note) have four bolts 90-95 and I believe some 96+ Turbo models. And the Sera, from what I could find, the suspension seems to be the same as the 92-95 Paseo.

What does that mean? It means that if you buy a coil-over set from a 97-99 Tercel (96+ Starlet) for your 91-96ish Paseo or Tercel, that you won't be able to use that nice pillow ball or hard aluminum top mount for the front. All you have to do is unbolt that top support from the front struts and reuse you factory top mount support. Not too bad right? Some good news; all the front strut bars are compatible. Just don't worry about the missing stud or extra hole depending on car and product. This three bolt/four bolt problem is further compounded by companies not really knowing what fits what year Tercel or Paseo, even though they make the product. For this very reason, I bought a 96 Paseo over a newer one because I knew that the front suspension was the same as my 92 Paseo and it would simplify my ordering of parts.

Now you are not "out of luck" one way or the other. You can always modify your car to fit either the three or the four bolt top support, but I recommend staying with the factory set up in your car. There are no issues with the rear as they were all the same two bolt set up. I hope this helps out someone who may have bought a coil-over setup or a front strut bar for there 91-94 Tercel and found that it didn't fit. Now you know what to do. Also be sure to ask for a picture of the ACTUAL part being ordered so that you get the right one. This is especially important on ebay where nobody knows anything about what they are selling. P.S. The following information was provided by Mulberry and is a supplememnt covering the EL31 Tercel. 
"Also in addition to the above, if you have an EL31 (87-90) Terc, it uses a top strut mount with only three studs but the fourth hole on the body is plugged with a plastic grommet. When using the pillowball mounts on the EL31 chassis you need to enlargen the strut mount holes for easy fitment. IMHO the Ractive front strut bar is a relatively inexpensive but sturdy piece and tightens up the front end quite a bit. This is available for the 95-99 Tercs. If I remember correctly I paid 45 bucks for it."
 
 
P.S.S. To further add to Mulberry's statement and to clear confusion, the 97+ Tercels and Paseos have a fourth "locater" stub that can be drilled out and modified to fit the fourth stud. Also, if you find a coil-over set for a 97+ Tercel with only three studs, just buy the Cusco upper mounts and use them on your older Paseo or Tercel that has four studs. As for some more in-depth front upper strut bar information, here you go. You have to look at an actual bar. I sell these (the Netami one, I can get others too by special order) so I know, plus both of my cars have Cusco bars front and rear. The bars available have two, three, or four holes. The three and four hole bars are obvious, but there are a couple of different two hole bars.
Two hole bar 1: This has a hole for the top (closest to firewall) and the inside (closest to the engine) stud.

Two hole bar 2: This bar has a partial mount plate and sits at an angle. I believe that one of the TRD ones is like this. It connects to the top and the inside studs.
